السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكاتُهُ‎

A Guide to Understanding the Significance of Qurbani?

Eid al-Adha, the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is a time of immense significance, joy and spiritual reflection, uniting Muslims around the world. It marks the completion of Hajj and celebrates the inspiring story of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) unwavering faith. During this sacred time, we remember his bravery in sacrificing his beloved son Ismail (AS) at Allah’sﷻ command, a testament to his complete obedience. Eid al-Adha is an essential part in your guide to understanding Qurbani.

Ultimately, Allahﷻ intervened through His infinite mercy, providing a ram as a substitute for Ismail (AS). Ibrahim’s (AS) act of devotion continues to resonate with Muslims today. We honour his sacrifice through the practice of Qurbani, a beautiful opportunity to express our deepest gratitude for Allah’sﷻ countless blessings. By donating Qurbani, we ensure those less fortunate share in the bounty of Eid ul-Adha, strengthening the bonds of our Ummah.

The Prophet Muhammadﷺ said, “Whoever offers a sacrifice after the Eid prayer has completed his sacrifice and followed the Sunnah of the Muslims.”” –[Bukhari]

During the joyous celebration of Eid al-Adha, Muslims worldwide participate in the ritual of Qurbani, also known as Udhiyah. This sacrifice, deeply rooted in the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), involves sharing meat with the poor in complete devotion to Allahﷻ.  It’s more than just a physical act; it’s a powerful demonstration of piety, submission to Allah’sﷻ will, and profound gratitude for His countless blessings.

In Surah Al-Hajj (22:37), the Qur’an beautifully captures the essence of Qurbani: “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allahﷻ, but it is your piety that reaches Him.” This verse emphasises that the true value lies in the sincerity and devotion of the believer.

The Profound Significance of Qurbani

On the joyous occasion of Eid al-Adha, Qurbani is a cornerstone of our celebration. This Ibadah carries profound meaning and is a powerful reminder that strengthens our Deen, drawing us closer to Allahﷻ.

  • Submission and Gratitude: Through Qurbani, we demonstrate complete submission to Allah’sﷻ will. It’s a heartfelt expression of gratitude for His countless blessings that enrich our lives.
  • Remembrance: Qurbani serves as a powerful act of Dhikr that keeps alive the extraordinary story of Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) unwavering faith and his willingness to sacrifice his beloved son Ismail (AS) at Allah’sﷻ command. This act of obedience inspires us to strengthen our own faith and commitment to submit to Allah’sﷻ will.
  • Charity: The distribution of Qurbani meat serves as a powerful example of core Islamic values. It meets our duty of Sadaqah, ensuring a portion of the meat reaches those less fortunate. Not only do we fulfil our social responsibility, but we strengthen the bonds of our Ummah.

Qurbani is a time for self-reflection, spiritual connection, and helping those in need, aiming to make Eid al-Adha a joyous and meaningful occasion for the entire Ummah.

Rules and Guidelines for Performing Qurbani Correctly

Qurbani is a deeply meaningful act of worship, but to truly embody its spirit, it’s crucial to carry it out in accordance with Islamic teachings and principles. While the final decision rests with Allahﷻ, adhering to the guidelines can increase the likelihood of our Qurbani’s acceptance. Here are some important points to consider when performing Qurbani:

  • Sincerity of Intention: The most important part of any good deed is having a sincere heart. Ensure your Qurbani is solely for the sake of pleasing Allahﷻ, not for recognition or worldly benefits.
  • Following Islamic Guidelines: Upholding Islamic practices, from selecting healthy animals and treating them well to ensuring a humane slaughter and an equal distribution of the meat, demonstrates your respect for this sacred act and embodies your dedication to Islamic values.
  • Choosing a Healthy Animal: Selecting a healthy animal signifies your devotion to offering your very best to Allahﷻ. It also ensures the meat is high quality, safe and nutritious for those who will receive it.
  • Compassionate Treatment: Before the act of Qurbani, the animal should be treated with kindness and respect before sacrifice, reflecting the Islamic teachings of mercy towards all of Allah’sﷻ creations.
  • Gratitude and Sharing: Lift your heart in thanks to Allahﷻ for His infinite blessings as you prepare for the Qurbani. Embrace the spirit of giving by sharing the Qurbani meat with loved ones, neighbours, and those less fortunate.

By focusing on these aspects, you can elevate your Qurbani into a heartfelt act, fulfilling your obligations to please Allahﷻ. Remember, the most important element is your sincere intention and adherence to the established Islamic guidelines.

Making a Difference with Qurbani

One Ummah understands the importance of Qurbani and its potential to provide much-needed sustenance to those facing hardship. Last year, your Qurbani donations helped feed over 130,000 people. This year, we will distribute Qurbani meat across 18 calamity-stricken nations grappling with poverty, conflict, and natural disasters.

Your generous contribution will make a real difference in the lives of many underprivileged families and communities. Celebrate Eid al-Adha by fulfilling the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammadﷺ and sharing Qurbani with those who need it most. If you haven’t already donated your Qurbani, you can do so here, InshaAllah.
