The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” [Hadith, Sahih Muslim]

WATER THE SEEDS OF CHANGE

A staggering 2 BILLION people don’t have safe access to clean water. More than 1 million deaths each year are caused by infections from unclean births. Women and children walk mile after mile, their bare feet dragged through the roughest terrain with the weight of 20 litres on their head.

Water sanitation is vital for living a dignified, healthy life. Reliable access to safe, clean water means that drinking, cooking and washing no longer pose a risk of illness. Over the years, your donations have allowed us to fight against water poverty and alleviate the suffering of millions

In 22/23, we gave a drop of hope to almost 150,000 beneficiaries through our water projects. One Ummah worked hard to fight against the lack of clean water: last year, we constructed 90 bore wells in Kenya, 40 in Sierra Leone, 20 in Uganda and 15 in Tanzania.

Earn ongoing rewards for yourself or a loved one by donating towards one of our Sadaqah Jariyah projects. These include water & sanitation projects, building masajid and supporting our worldwide campaigns.

Sa’d ibn Ubadah reported that he asked the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Shall I give charity on her behalf?” The Prophet (ﷺ), said, “Yes.” I said, “Which charity is best?” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “A drink of water.”

For £1,250, you can build a bore-hole well (Uganda / Sierra Leone / Kenya) which can provide clean drinking water for a village of up to 1,000 people. This well will act as a Sadaqah Jariyah for you or a family member for as long as it is functioning and saving lives in the community.

WHY SHOULD I BUILD A WELL?/THE BEST CHARITY

Imagine not having clean water to drink. This is the harsh reality for billions of people today. Lack of clean water casts a shadow over countless lives from grappling with waterborne diseases spawned by contaminated sources to the inability to maintain even basic hygiene practices.

Giving water is highly recommended in Islam. Whether it be a glass of water or a well, anyone who gives water for the sake of Allah ﷻ will be rewarded immensely during this blessed month.

Save Lives:

Dirty water is a major problem in developing countries, especially for children. Each time the water one donates saves someone’s life, “it is as if he had saved all of Mankind” –(Quran, 5:32).

Forgiveness:

Allah’s Messenger (saw) said, “A prostitute was forgiven by Allah, because, passing by a panting dog near a well and seeing that the dog was about to die of thirst, she took off her shoe, and tying it with her head-cover she drew out some water for it. So, Allah forgave her because of that.” – [Bukhari] This hadith shows how beneficial giving water to an animal is, imagine you built a well, SubhanAllah.

Sadaqah Jariyah:

The gift of water can empower and transform communities from the ground up. Clean water leads to healthier communities, more children in school, and more sustainable livelihoods. It is also a great form of Sadaqah Jariyah.

Sa’d ibn ‘Ubadah reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Shall I give charity on her behalf?” The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Yes.” I said, “Which charity is best?” The Prophet said, “A drink of water.”– [Sunan al-Nasā’ī 3664]

Not everyone is able to build wells for entire communities, but rewards are based on the sincerity of your Niyyah.

Your contribution, no matter the amount, will reach desperate families on the frontline of crisis, providing the essentials needed to survive and rebuild.

Well FAQs

1 How long will it take to build a well?

We estimate that wells will take 4-12 months to complete. This is because we ensure suitable locations are chosen and the site is thoroughly inspected before we begin the building process. Build time can vary country to country and with adverse weather conditions.

2 How long is the life expectancy of a well?

Depending on the region it can last up to 10 years but that is dependent on the country and the usage of the well.

3 Will I receive information when my well is built?

We do not issue progress reports; however, donor enquiries are welcome. We ask that donors allow up to 12 months for completion, after which they will receive a short completion report.

4 What is included in my completion report?

We produce a completion report for every well donated. The report includes the exact location of the well and photographs of the well with its personalised plaque. You can specify the short plaque name when you make the donation (Note: plaque will appear exactly as stated, so please review your spelling carefully etc.)

5 How do One Ummah select locations for a well?

Our local partners on ground identify areas which are most in need of our well donations. Our primary objective is to deliver to those most in need; however, donors can request specific locations.

6 Who maintains and safeguards the well after it has been built?

We work with local partners on the ground to ensure all wells are regularly maintained and safeguarded. We have a community-based maintenance system for beneficiaries. For major issues, communities are advised to contact our local partners who then contact the relevant One Ummah Office.

7 why are water wells not zakat applicable?

At One Ummah, we typically distribute zakat to beneficiaries in the form of cash, which enables them to apply it towards their specific needs. It is important to note that we do have a select number of projects that are considered zakat eligible at One Ummah, and these can be found in detail on our appeals page.
