What is Zakat?
Zakat translates to purification and growth. It is an annual pillar of worship, equal in obligation to the five daily prayers. Paying Zakat purifies your wealth, removes attachment to worldly possessions, and protects the most vulnerable members of society.
Zakat becomes mandatory once your net qualifying wealth meets or exceeds the Nisab threshold and remains in your possession for one complete Hawl (lunar year of 354 days).
According to UN reports, over 1.1 billion people globally live in acute multidimensional poverty, with basic survival dependent on humanitarian relief.
Nisab Threshold
Eligibility is determined using the benchmark of 87.48 grams of gold or 612.36 grams of silver.
Hawl (Lunar Year)
One full Islamic year must pass on the Nisab qualifying assets before Zakat becomes payable.
Qualifying Wealth
Includes cash, savings, gold, silver, shares, business inventory, and trade assets after subtracting essential personal needs and immediate liabilities.
'Teach them that Allah has made it obligatory for them to pay Zakat from their property, to be taken from the wealthy among them and given to the poor.' [Bukhari, 1395]

Who Pays and Who Receives Zakat?
Islam outlines clear parameters regarding who must pay Zakat and who is eligible to receive it.
Criteria for Payers:
- Adult Muslims of sound mind who own wealth above the Nisab threshold.
- Full ownership of qualifying assets for one complete lunar year.
- Net wealth remaining above Nisab after deducting personal living costs and short-term debts.
The Eight Categories of Eligible Recipients:
Allah defines the recipients of Zakat in the Qur'an [Qur'an, 9:60]:
- The Poor who lack basic necessities.
- The Destitute who have no source of income.
- Zakat Administrators managing the distribution.
- Individuals whos hearts are being inclined towards Islam.
- Freeing captives or those in bondage.
- Those in extreme or unmanageable debt.
- Individuals striving in noble causes for the sake of Allah.
- Stranded or struggling travellers in need.

While Zakat can be paid at any time once the Hawl is completed, many believers choose to fulfil their obligation during Ramadan to maximize spiritual reward:
- Good deeds and charity are multiplied manifold during the blessed month.

'Righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets, and gives wealth, despite love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveller, those who ask, and for freeing slaves, and who establishes prayer and gives Zakat.' [Qur'an, 2:177]
