The Myanmar Crisis: Background and Causes
The Rohingya people are a Muslim minority group from the Rakhine state of Myanmar. For decades, they have faced systematic persecution, discrimination, and violent military crackdowns. Denied citizenship since 1982, the Rohingya are widely considered one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. They have no legal status in Myanmar and are restricted from access to education, healthcare, and freedom of movement.
In 2017, a brutal military campaign — described by the United Nations as textbook ethnic cleansing — forced over 700,000 Rohingya to flee their homes within weeks. Villages were burnt, thousands were killed, and women and children faced horrific violence. Most survivors fled to Bangladesh, settling in Cox's Bazar, now home to the world's largest refugee camp, where over one million Rohingya live in desperate and overcrowded conditions.
