Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana or Sadaqatul Fitr, is an obligatory charity required from every Muslim before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. It serves to purify our fasting from minor shortcomings while ensuring that impoverished families receive nourishing food to celebrate Eid with dignity.
Through One Ummah, your Fitrana is distributed directly to vulnerable families, orphans, and displaced refugees in areas facing extreme crisis, ensuring no one is forgotten on the day of Eid.
'The Messenger of Allah ordained Zakat al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer, but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.' [Abu Dawud, 1609]
Across regions impacted by conflict and economic collapse, millions face acute food insecurity. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), over 343 million people worldwide face high levels of food insecurity, with acute hunger threatening communities in countries like Syria, Yemen, and Somalia.
Fulfilling your Zakat al-Fitr provides direct relief to those most in need:
Purifying the Fast
Acts as a spiritual cleansing for any inadvertent lapses or idle speech during Ramadan.
Providing Nutritious Meals
Delivers essential food staples so struggling parents can feed their children on Eid.
Restoring Eid Joy
Ensures every member of our global Ummah can participate in the blessings and celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
'A man asked the Prophet, "Which aspect of Islam is best?" He said, "Feeding people and greeting those you know and those you do not know."' [Bukhari, 12]
One Ummah operates under a strict 100% donation policy, meaning every single penny of your Fitrana is spent directly on food for eligible beneficiaries, with zero deductions for administrative costs.

In the time of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, Fitrana was given as one saa' of staple food, such as dates or grain. A saa' equals four madd, which is the quantity held by cupping two hands together four times. In the UK, this is calculated as approximately £5 per person to cover the cost of a local staple meal.
Fitrana is obligatory upon every Muslim who possesses food in excess of their basic needs for one day and night. The head of the household must pay on behalf of themselves and all dependents, including young children and elderly family members.
Unlike annual Zakat, which depends on wealth exceeding a threshold (nisab), Fitrana is a fixed amount applicable to all Muslims who have sufficient provisions beyond their basic needs.
Fitrana must be paid before the start of the Eid prayer. Donating early in Ramadan allows One Ummah teams to source and distribute food items to families in advance, ensuring meals are ready on Eid day.
Eligibility
Zakat is due annually only when wealth reaches the nisab threshold. Zakat al-Fitr is due from anyone with food exceeding their immediate daily needs.
Amount
Zakat is calculated at 2.5% of eligible assets. Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed, flat rate per person (£5).
Timing
Zakat can be paid at any point during the lunar year. Zakat al-Fitr is paid specifically during Ramadan before the Eid praye
