    What is Sadaqah?

Sadaqah isn't just charity—it is a profound act of worship, your direct connection to Allah'sﷻ mercy. The word originates from the Arabic root ‘sidq’ (truth), embodying sincerity, compassion and faith. From a warm smile to a life-saving donation, any good deed that helps others for the sake of Allahﷻ counts as Sadaqah, drawing us closer to Him and purifying our souls.

Unlike Zakat, which has specific rules, Sadaqah is a voluntary charity given for the pleasure of Allahﷻ. Sadaqah comes directly from the heart, whenever you choose, in any amount, to anyone in need.

Prophet Muhammadﷺ said: "Protect yourself from Hell-fire even by giving a piece of date as charity." –[Bukhari]

    Examples of Sadaqah

Each act of Sadaqah washes away sins, softens our hearts, keeps us humble and opens unimaginable doors to Allah'sﷻ mercy.

Sadaqah takes countless forms, each carrying immense reward:

    • Material Giving: Donating money, food, clothing, or shelter.
    • Physical Acts: Helping someone, removing harm from a path, a smile or even a kind word.
    • Spiritual Sadaqah: Sharing knowledge, making Du’a for others, or guiding someone to good.
    • Sadaqah Jariyah (Continuous Charity): Building a well, planting a tree, or funding education—acts that benefit people long after your lifetime.

The difference between Sadaqah and Sadaqah Jariyah lies in the type of charity and the type of reward that comes with it. All Sadaqah is immensely virtuous; Sadaqah Jariyah is a perpetual charity that continues to earn you rewards, even after death—for example, digging a water well, planting trees, or sponsoring an orphan.

    What is Lillah?

Lillah, literally meaning “For Allahﷻ”, is another sacred type of voluntary charity. Typically, a Lillah donation is given to an institution to contribute to the betterment of others. Masajid, hospitals and schools are some examples of places that would receive Lillah.

Lillah is charity in its purest form—given solely for Allah'sﷻ pleasure and the benefit of others. You're not just helping others; you're offering your wealth directly to Allahﷻ as an act of worship and surrender.

What is the Difference Between Lillah and Sadaqah?

There are fewer rules for Sadaqah than there are for Lillah. While Sadaqah can be any act of kindness, Lillah also comes from a place of compassion and generosity, typically in the form of a monetary donation. All acts of Lillah can be considered Sadaqah, but not all acts of Sadaqah are considered Lillah.

    The Benefits of Giving Sadaqah

As much as our Sadaqah benefits those in need, our hearts also need Sadaqah.

    • It cleanses our soul: Each act of Sadaqah washes away sins. Sadaqah will soften our hearts, keep us humble and open unimaginable doors to Allah'sﷻ mercy.
    • It increases our Barakah (blessings): We give just a little, and Allahﷻ will provide us with an abundance of blessings. Allahﷻ doesn’t just purify our wealth, He blesses our health, our families, and our peace of mind.
    • It protects us: Your charity not only helps One Ummah save lives, but it also protects you and your loved ones. The Prophetﷺ said: “Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity.” [Tirmidhi].

Why is Sadaqah Important in Islam?

Sadaqah is a cornerstone of Islamic teachings because:

    • It embodies Taqwa (God-consciousness) and Ihsan (excellence in worship).
    • It breaks the chains of poverty and redistributes wealth in a just manner.
    • It unites the Ummah, reminding us that we are one body—when one part suffers, the whole Ummah feels the pain.

Your Sadaqah is a blessed means of earning Allah’sﷻ pleasure, and hopefully securing eternal rewards.

"The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed of grain which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies His reward for whom He wills." —[Qur'an 2:261]
