Fitrana is a compulsory donation which allows every Muslim to be fed on the day of Eid. One Ummah will make sure the people who need it the most get it before Eid.
Zakat al-Fitr, also known as Fitrana or Sadaqatul Fitr, is an obligatory charity that every Muslim must give before the Eid prayer at the end of Ramadan. It is a small yet powerful donation designed to purify our fasting, atone for any shortcomings during Ramadan, and provide food for the poor and needy. This act of giving ensures that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can celebrate Eid with dignity and joy.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“The Messenger of Allah ordained Zakat al-Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]
Fitrana is not just an obligation; it is a means to express gratitude to Allah for the blessings of Ramadan while helping those in need share in the joy of Eid. Paying Fitrana purifies our fasting by compensating for any imperfections and enables us to support families struggling with poverty.
While both forms of charity are pillars of Islam, they differ in key aspects:
Eligibility: Zakat is due annually on specific assets once they reach the nisab threshold, whereas Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for all Muslims who have enough food for a day, regardless of their wealth.
Amount: Zakat is calculated as 2.5% of one’s qualifying assets, varying based on individual wealth. In contrast, Zakat al-Fitr is a fixed, modest amount applicable equally to all.
Timing: Zakat can be paid at any time during the lunar year once due, while Zakat al-Fitr must be paid during Ramadan, specifically before the Eid prayer.
Sadaqatul Fitr is an alternative name for Fitrana or Zakat al Fitr.
At the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Fitrana was given as one saa’ of staple food, such as dates or barley. A saa’ equals four madd, which is the amount that can be scooped up with both hands cupped together. Today, this quantity is often converted into a monetary value based on staple food prices, which amounts to approximately £5 per person in the UK.
Fitrana is obligatory for every Muslim who has food in excess of their daily needs. It must be paid by or on behalf of every member of your household, including children and dependents. Parents or guardians can pay on their behalf if someone cannot pay themselves.
Fitrana must be paid during Ramadan, with the latest permissible time being before the Eid prayer begins. Paying it earlier allows charitable organisations like One Ummah to distribute aid effectively so that those in need can benefit in time for Eid celebrations. Some scholars recommend paying it before sunset on the last day of Ramadan to ensure maximum rewards.
